Fan Expo Canada 2011

Fan Expo Canada 2011:

4 days in the Artist Alley booth A140-P with the guys from Spent Pencils plus Neo, Reiven, Camee, our all girl support team.

Met some amazing people and had an awesome time.

I hunted down 2 different Squirrel Girls and gave them a Squirrel Girl print.  Sadly, I did not take their pictures like so.

Also had 2 new prints for sale:

Felicia from Darkstalkers and all the fighting games with Hello Kitty.

Harley Quinn and Ed the hyena from Lion King.  There were a lot of laughs for Ed.  Kudos to Ed.  He still has such a huge fanbase.  Thanks to everyone who gave these two fruitcakes a good home.

Here are some commissions/sketches I remembered to document.

 Mia for Chris

Buxom Anime Catwoman for Willy

Inkwash Batman Beyond for Ofir

Um, Serena(?) and Jenna, if you're out there, I forgot to take a picture of Trevor "The Thwarted (?) Vegetarian Loser"  If you could send me one, that would be awesome.

Watercolour Ibuki for Christian.  Also, if you're out there, I neglected to snap a pic, if you could send me one, I would be grateful.

Upcoming, a sexy dragon lady for Adam and Rainbow Mika also for another Adam.

Sick Kids Hospital

Back in June, I went the 2nd annual Sketches For Pledges event with a bunch of amazing local artists from the GTA.

The turn out was great and we raised alot of money for a worthy cause.  If you can, please come to the next event.

"The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is recognized as one of the world’s foremost paediatric health-care institutions and is Canada’s leading centre dedicated to advancing children’s health through the integration of patient care, research and education."

Sketches for Pledges: Sick Kids Hospital and FCB Day

Free Comic Book Day May 7th, 2011.

I sat with Arnold Tobago from Spent Pencils, as well as some writers from Kill Shakespeare, Marvin Law, and Kalman Andrasofszky.  It was rather busy with a 30 minute wait in line outside.

This was first occasion I got to draw The Flash, Catwoman, Iron Giant fondling Pikachu, Batman and Robin, Betty Cooper as Ariel, Adam West wrestling a giant squid, and Kick Ass.  Also posed for a picture with my first fan, whom I like to imagine was my illegitimate vaguely Eurasian 9 year old son.

I've come to realize my forte is drawing prepubescent girls with disproportionately tiny heads.  (hold ctrl while clicking to open images in new tab/window)

Nga as Psylocke

  Monkey smoking a spliff

 Child-rearing hipped transsexual Aquaman

Shadow Cat with broken arm and Lockhead

If you are in the neighborhood this Saturday, please come by the Silver Snail and make a donation to Sick Kids and get an awesome sketch from some of the artists there.  If you cant, Thursday, June 2 at RBC 320 Front St West, is the main Sick Kids Sketches for Pledges Fundraiser Event.  It was an incredible success last year, hopefully it will be just as good, if not better, this year.  Hope to see you there.

SQUIRREL GIRL at Toronto ComiCON Annual Fan Appreciation

Steve Ditko's Squirrel Girl

Last minute print I made for the Toronto ComiCon back in April.  Got some pretty good laughs, sales, and actual fans of hers out to the show!  Still learning digital colouring.  (Also pictured:  Monkey Joe, Tippy Toe, and unknown squirrel minion)

Fan Appreciation Day.  It was my first time drawing a lot of characters for people, like a druggy Aquaman, cutesy WonderWoman AND Batman, a sad Deathbird, and Carnage.  Also, a few friends for fun.

The Aborigine tracker's shock and awe, re:  Arthur Rackham's Alice in Wonderland.

Please subscribe if you can.  More to come hopefully!  Possibly at a local library near you, all across Canada.

I Scream Awards: Fashion Illustration

I was asked to do some artwork for an event by Marcus Kan.  This was my first fashion illustration gig.  (Thanks to Mr. Kan and Celeste for all your help with your references; Katie Rodgers, Michael Sanderson).  It was a great night, and people seemed to like what was going on.
The I Scream Awards were held at 36 Chambers Studios mid December, before Christmas, celebrating the achievements of several talented and enterprising individuals emerging from the Toronto fashion, art, and design scene.

There was a photoshoot shot by Marcus and his team, with the spotlight centered around these local visionaries.

Marcus later on envisioned a recurrent theme of witches and of the occult, as did I.  Here, I worked off of descriptive annotations for each piece.

Jonathan Elias  rabid wolf man with cornstalk fetish

Breeyn McCarney  scrying pendent spider girl who likes to power sweep

Mike Lewis  smiley face balloon guy with imaginary Smith & Wesson .357

Hawley Dunbar  masochistic Shakespearean Yorick girl

Richard Fabregui  pink-eye ice cream guy a la Patrick Nagel.

Tristan Julian Ray Banning  autumn man doing a rain dance

Angela Martin  hitchcock raven girl with athame

Marc Daniel Piercey  goblet man with sacrificial dead bunny juice

Did 1 or 2 each day for about a week before the awards night.
Addendum:  Sketchbook rough ups.

Marcus Kan is a local fashion blogger and fashion photographer with a high volume readership and following.  He had a group photography show at Sleeping Giant Gallery some time ago with some really amazing guys and gals.  I, along with several others, have also written for his blog, à la mode (updated continuously, by the hour).

For the past year or so, I've been contributing entries here and there, mostly on the work of people I've met (David Cutler, Meaghan Carter, Ramon Perez, Celeste Ramos, and Megan Leonard), new emerging art, comics, graphic novels, etc.  Check it out!
